The South African Military Veterans Organisation of Australasia (SAMVOA) is proud to bring to the Australian and New Zealand public, the opportunity to visit some of the battlefields that their forefathers might have fought on more than a century ago.

Please view our website on www.samvoa.org; for a full colour brochure and day to day details.

The Historical Background:

The Second Boer War (1899 – 1902) was fought between the British Empire and the Boer South African Republic (Transvaal) and its Orange Free State ally, which was the culmination of longstanding tensions in southern Africa, a land recently rich in mineral wealth.

Some 16,000 Australians and 6,500 New Zealanders volunteered to fight for Britain against the Boer settlers in a conflict that remains Australia's third-worst in terms of casualties. Australians entered the war as six separate colonies and, after Australian Federation in 1901, these forces became Australian, hence this was the first time that Australians fought as Australians.

The Tours on offer:

There are five tour options on offer, ranging from 10 days to 18 days with flexibility to join tours at three points along the way, being the Victorian Falls Tour, the Battlefields Tour or the Kruger National Park Tour.

This is a home-grown tour at domestic South African prices, aimed to suit the South African pocket, which means that for Australians or New Zealanders, this will make this most affordable and close to half the price for comparable tours. Please view the estimated costs below in AUD converted at $0.1206 as of 16th February.

The Victoria Falls is Africa's most amazing sight and well worth seeing and is an absolute must.

Diederik van ‘T Hof is the Tour Operator and he has been operating tours for over 20 years and is an expert on African wild life and Military history, whilst still serving in one of South Africa's premier regiments. During the tour, Diederik's Regiment, the Transvaal Scottish, allied to the Black Watch, will provide an amazing backdrop with its pipe bands, kilted soldiers and their regimental home, which is the original home of the Cullinan Family of Cullinan Diamond fame. The Cullinan diamond is the largest rough gem-quality diamond ever found, at 3106.75 carats (621.35 g).

Get a chance to shoot with South African Service Rifles before embarking to the Voortrekker Monument, which is another splendid attraction that should not be missed and then on to the Battlefields themselves that include those of the Zulu War where battles such as Rorke's Drift were fought and more Victoria Crosses were awarded to members of a single regiment than at any other time.

Then travel on to the Kruger National Park, the Mecca of all game reserves.
