Right from the start most of us sensed that this was the beginning of greater things, since everything just seemed to come together at the right time. For years faithful prayers paved the way, but now, faster than anyone had anticipated, a young but vibrant, energetic and dynamic church took shape right in front of our eyes. The first service was held on the 27th of April 2008 and was attended by 37 people of different age groups. Their faces beamed with joy and thankfulness was in the hearts of those who attended.

By the 5th service the writing was on the wall. We would have to look for something bigger than the large sitting and dining room of the old Queenslander that housed us up to now. The 1st of June 2008 saw the founding of the Afrikaans Christian Church of Australia (ACCA). After the service 38 adults and 18 children signed on as members of the congregation. The congregation grows weekly and already has more than 60 members.

Our focus as a congregation is on glorifying God the Father, through his Son, Jesus Christ. Although we carry the name as an Afrikaans-speaking church, we do welcome with open arms anyone who believes in Jesus Christ as the Son of God and our personal Saviour. We acknowledge that there are specific needs amongst Afrikaans-speaking believers with regards to the way they communicate, worship and minister to each other.

Measured by the amount of time spent by members conversing after the service we know that one basic need is met. The experience of an indescribable feeling of familiarity, fellowship and belonging whilst you share, sympathize, laugh, understand and express yourself in a language and culture known and loved since childhood. A need so easily overlooked and shrugged off as not being fundamentally important for migrants in their day to day happiness and adjustment to life in Australia.

The Lord recognises all languages. If someone wants to worship in any language, the core factor remains: Getting together and praising and praying. Mac wants to cast them out instead of thanking he Lord for their worship.
