What's all the fuss about caffeine?

One minute coffee is good for you and the next it's not good for you. One thing we do know about caffeine is that heavy consumption of this chemical doubles your need for calcium because, as the body strains to eliminate what it perceives as poison, it flushes calcium from your body, via the kidneys.

It also allows more calcium to be secreted into the gastrointestinal tract. As a result drinking three cups of coffee a day increases your osteoporosis risk by 82%.

But please don't decide to switch to decaffeinated drinks as dangerous chemicals are used to remove the caffeine.

Iodine Deficiency

Children with severe iodine deficiency have reduced IQ levels, according to the findings of an extensive study in New Zealand. The research found that children who were supplemented performed significantly better than the placebo group. Iodine supplementation improved perceptual reasoning in mildly iodine deficient children, suggesting that mild iodine deficiency may prevent children from attaining their full intellectual potential.

Vitamin D Helps Diabetics

About one billion people worldwide have low levels of vitamin D and more than half of middle-aged vitamin D-deficient patients develop cardivascular disease.

Research has found that in women with type 2 diabetes mellitus, the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency is a third higher than that of control subjects and low vitamin D levels nearly double the risk of developing cardiovascular disease compared with diabetic patients with normal vitamin D levels.

The results of this study showed that vitamin D suppressed the cholesterol uptake and formed foam cells (an early marker of atherosclerosis) in type 2 diabetics.

Understanding Depression

Depression is associated with inadequate serotonin levels. Serotonin, like all neurotransmitters, conveys messages throughout the nervous system. Low levels lead to insomnia and mood disturbances. No matter how hard someone with low serotonin levels tries to lift their mood, the poor communication between the cells will prevent this from even happening.

It is estimated that between 15% and 38% of depressed people have low folate levels. Mental and neurological symptoms are commonly associated with dietary deficiencies of vitamins and minerals, not least the B vitamins which play a central role in neurological function.
