So here you are: Your NYRs in your hand. You read aloud, “I want to get fitter. Lose weight. Run daily. Quit smoking. Eat more healthily….” Come to think of it (you say to yourself) you had these last year… and the year before that!
But THIS year you say, you are determined to have a different outcome… But the niggling doubt is there: How am I going to make it different this time!!!?
Well, the good news is that it is easier than you think. Seriously. Here are a few tricks, successful NYR doers do, which the rest of us are able to do, but slip up along the way. ..
First things first:
DON'T READ FURTHER IF YOU DON'T WANT TO MAKE YOU NYRS' COME TRUE!
TRICK 1: FIND SOMEONEWHO WANTS YOU TO SUCCEED
This person can be a boyfriend, a mother, a brother or Ouma…anyone you know who really wants you to succeed and achieve your NYRs. This is someone you can share your NYRs with without them laughing out loud. Someone who will be excited for you. Someone you can depend on to urge you on when things are tough. Challenge you when you may want to give up. In short, an unreasonable and yet encouraging coach
Find someone who wants you to succeed
TRICK 2: FIND A “WHY”
It is not the ‘how' which is important at this stage, but rather a big powerful ‘why'. It is a powerful dream, a mental picture between your ears of you at your awesome best. Picture the scene: you are slowly walking along the white sandy beach, looking fantastic, relaxed… passing the other sun soakers… you become aware of the sighs of admiration from those you pass… the feelings you have of total confidence well up inside you… they bubble out as an “ohhh yesss” on your lips... you look awesome you feel awesome, you are awesome. And here is the trick: make this picture in your head much more vivid, bolder, louder than the picture you see in the mirror as you get out the shower… Do this at least twice a day. It really starts at this point
Do you have a strong, detailed dream of what you seriously want? yes…..no…. (find it inside!!!)
TRICK 3: REALIZE YOU REALLY CAN
There are very few things in life that you say you haven't done before. And you have abilities that you have used before that can be used again for a better result. For example, you haven't run a marathon, but you have run over short distances. A marathon is just more of the same (I know I've done lots). How about stopping smoking: You've stopped before, albeit for short times, now do it again with the help of TRICK 1, QUITLINE and all the other support you' can get nowadays.
Think back to a time when you did something similar enough to your NYR. Now remember what it was like, and realize with growing confidence that you can do it again. Chat this idea through with your Coach
TRICK 4: KEEP OPTIMISTIC
Optimism is critical to pushing through the trying times. Psychologists say that optimism can be developed? But how?
Step 1. Commit to being your own best friend. Don't expect perfection, just determination. Speak kindly and encouragingly to yourself. “You can do this! I know you can! Keep going! You're doing great! You going amazing!” is much better than “This is going to be difficult! What was I thinking!? Who am I fooling?!!!” Oh, this is too hard…”
Step 2. Listen to your Coach.
TRICK 5: BE RESILIENT
Remember you do have what it takes. Besides, you can only live one moment at a time. Commit to be resilient in that moment. You can be strong in that moment. And the good news is that all moments like this pass. The other good news is that courage and resilience are stronger than mere moments as they are part of who you are. And they can be developed as you make demands on them.
Explore examples of people who you admire who have developed their courage and resilience. Lance Armstrong the cancer survivor who has won the Tour de France 7 times. Terry Fox ( See Youtube “Terry-Fox-never-giveup”) or someone closer to you who has inspired you by the way they live.. Knocked down often, but never knocked out
Then make the connections with your life and realize how similar they are to you. So there they are! These tricks aren't, strictly speaking, tricks. But they are used powerfully by those who have achieved much with their lives. They have the clout to help ordinary people do extraordinary things. Ordinary people like you and me when we take our New Years Resolutions seriously.
